· We didn’t need Milgram to tell us we have a tendency to obey orders. What we didn’t know before Milgram’s experiments is just how powerful this tendency is. And having been enlightened about our extreme readiness to obey authorities, we can try to take steps to guard ourselves against unwelcome or reprehensible commands.
In a second analysis, I compared the outcomes of obedience experiments conducted in the U.S. with those conducted in other countries. Remarkably, the average obedience rates were very similar: In the U.S. studies, some 61 percent of the subjects were fully obedient, while elsewhere the obedience rate was 66 percent.
· Polish Market Review - Polish Economy
A slowdown is when your neighbour loses his job, while a recession is when you lose your job. As a lot of Poles have indeed lost their jobs, "recession" may after all be the right word.

· an uprising of Ukrainian Cossacks
The emergency began with an uprising of Ukrainian Cossacks that persisted in spite of Warsaw's efforts to subdue it by force. After the rebels won the intervention of Muscovy on their behalf, Tsar Aleksei conquered most of the eastern half of the country by 1655. Taking advantage of Poland's preoccupation, Charles X of Sweden rapidly overran much of the remaining territory of the commonwealth in 1655. Pushed to the brink of dissolution, Poland-Lithuania rallied to recover most of its losses to the Swedes.

· Barnes & Noble.com - Success for Dummies
If you open it, close it. If you turn it on, turn it off. If you unlock it, lock it up. If you break it, admit it. If you can't fix it, call in someone who can. If you borrow it, return it. If you value it, take care of it. If you make a mess, clean it up. If you move it, put it back. If it belongs to someone else, get permission to use it. If you don't know how to operate it, leave it alone. If it's none of your business, don't ask questions.
· Barnes & Noble.com - Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters President of a litigation consulting firm, McGraw is also a member of Oprah Winfrey's "Change Your Life TV" team. He advised Oprah during her Amarillo beef trial and attributes the inspiration for this book to that episode.
McGraw claims that people in dire situations have serious problems, including denial and choosing initial assumptions without testing them for accuracy. To create a life strategy that works, McGraw lays out his
ten "Life Laws" along with checklists
and 18 assignments.
Each chapter begins with one of the life laws: e.g., get real; you create your own experience; people do what works; and life is managed, not cured. He concludes with a wrap-up of a seven-step strategy, working toward set goals. This is similar in content to Zig Ziglar's Success for Dummies. Oprah's name may increase demand; buy as needed for self-help collections.--Lisa S. Wise, Broome Cty. P.L., Binghamton, NY
· He noticed it too Some time ago, Cafe Poland was due to be made into a Group by Yahoo!. Well, during the move, Yahoo! caught a cold and Cafe Poland seems to have disappeared.
IMHO deleted by one of the founding mothers ;)<--my own hinch
Normally found at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/cafepoland, it is neither there nor in the Groups section. Several messages have gone from the Founders to Yahoo, but they do not find it convenient to do anything about our problem. Until it is solved, and if you wish to be invited to a new club if we should form one, please write to the address below and leave a contact Email. Thank you.
